New Review For Movie Night Catches Us

Tanya Hamilton directed her own script, and though her ending leaves loose ends dangling, the movie is refreshing for its seriousness and originality.
Andrea Gronvall-Chicago Reader

Except for a stellar soundtrack by the Roots, there isn't much here to make anyone overly excited.
Stephanie Merry-Washington Post

As a director, Hamilton makes Liv Ullmann look like an action movie director - and just for the record, Ullmann makes Ingmar Bergman look like Jerry Bruckheimer.
Mick LaSalle-San Francisco Chronicle

Its rhythm forces audiences to pay attention to what its superb actors express non-verbally, and to measure the weight of the characters' past lives.
Michael Phillips-Chicago Tribune

The film leads to no showy conclusion, no spectacular climax. It is about movement possible within the soul even in difficult times.
Roger Ebert-Chicago Sun-Times

Night Catches Us, a politically sophisticated and ethically serious film, makes no big speeches or obvious points.
A.O. Scott-New York Times

Despite some on-the-nose dialogue and a needless revelatory flourish toward the end, Hamilton gets at the strangeness of lived American history, in which violent ruptures leave behind poorly understood scars.
Nicolas Rapold-Film Comment Magazine

...Night Catches Us has a lived-in, almost languid feel, with artistic cinematography by David Tumblety capturing moments that are as perfectly framed as still photographs.
Sarah Boslaugh-PopMatters

February 1, 2011 Writer-director Tanya Hamilton and two of today's most gifted actors have produced a sensitive drama with a powerful conclusion.
Nell Minow-Beliefnet

Tanya Hamilton's Night Catches Us, a snapshot of the post-Black Power movement era, suffers most from its structural deficiencies.
Gabe Leibowitz-Film and Felt

Writer-director Tanya Hamilton has crafted an intriguing narrative even if she struggles to realize it onscreen.
Matthew Sorrento-Film Threat

Attempts to pry the lid off a painful chapter of American history that textbook writers and elected officials would rather erase or whitewash.
Michael W. Phillips, Jr.-Goatdog's Movies

This is just another reminder there is a whole pool of acting talent in America, almost a whole film industry, that white audiences are largely unaware of.
Robert Roten-Laramie Movie Scope

The real story here is the arrival of (director Tanya) Hamilton.
Mike Scott-Times-Picayune

Washington and Mackie both deliver deeply-felt performances in roles that are all about nuance, particularly when the text sometimes fails them.
Ian Buckwalter-DCist

works in maddening shades of gray and pure, compelling lyricism to tell a tragic story about events that are neither right nor wrong, but somewhere in between
Andrea Chase-Killer Movie Reviews

An excellent achievement for its ability to weave so many complex themes and shades of gray with such poise.
Jeffrey M. Anderson-Combustible Celluloid

Anthony Mackie and Kerry Washington nearly rescue the piece but it just doesn't come together into anything memorable enough to recommend.
Brian Tallerico-HollywoodChicago.com

Sometimes [the film] wisely demonstrates that even in a volatile time and place, there's a time and place to take action. Other times it feels like a shorthand lesson for kids.
Matt Pais-Metromix.com

A poorly-paced, bland and underwhelming drama that can't be saved by its authentic production values nor by Washington and Mackie's strong performances.
Avi Offer-NYC Movie Guru

The movie evokes its time and place so potently that it almost doesn't matter that Hamilton's script proves unequal to her vision.
Mark Jenkins-NPR.org

New Review For Movie Elite Squad: The Enemy Within

The pace is quick, the violence is rough, and the visual style is documentary as Padilha hammers home his point: Someone is forever in the pocket of someone else as The System constantly adapts to protect itself.
Lisa Schwarzbaum-Entertainment Weekly

When this Enemy Within settles into key action sequences, such as a stunning nighttime ambush or a daytime battle against Fabio, it becomes wildly entertaining.
Robert Koehler-Variety

Throttles forward with remarkable aplomb and easily leaves the original in the dust.
William Goss-Film.com

Elite Squad is just urgent and complex enough to make it clear violence is more than a matter for academic debate.
Liam Lacey-Globe and Mail

A fast-paced, hard-hitting Brazilian police thriller.
Stephen Farber-Hollywood Reporter

Jammed with cliches but completely engrossing.
J. R. Jones-Chicago Reader

The entire last half hour is just incredibly disingenuous.
Ignatiy Vishnevetsky-Ebert Presents At The Movies

Padilha's film offers no easy answers, but the title is a tip off as to where at least his sympathies lie.
Marc Savlov-Austin Chronicle

A film that grabs you by the shirtfront and rarely lets up its grip.
Shawn Levy-Oregonian

The Enemy Within, it's not just the cops and robbers who are corrupt and greedy and barbarous, but also politicians and media representatives. The "system" is everywhere.
Cynthia Fuchs-PopMatters

Even if it's not as smart as it supposes itself to be, [the film] is still smart enough to be more than a decent way to waste time.
Tim Brayton-Antagony & Ecstasy

An epic crime drama from Rio de Janeiro with a thrilling pace and an over-the-top body count.
Liz Braun-Jam! Movies

Hard-hitting Brazilian thriller about police corruption, politics and crime colliding in Rio's favelas and corridors of power and law enforcement is as intelligent as it is entertaining.
Doris Toumarkine-Film Journal International

Moving to its own throbbing beat, Elite Squad: The Enemy Within offers an exhilaratingly bleak vision of what it describes as "an articulation of loathsome interests," in which the well-meaning suffer...

New Review For Movie Queen Of The Sun: What are the Bees Telling Us?

What we don't get in "Queen of the Sun'' is anyone suggesting there might be some merit to how agribusiness is conducted.
Mark Feeney-Boston Globe

"Queen" sheds much-needed light on a disaster in progress.
Gary Goldstein-Los Angeles Times

Rich subject matter and persuasive presentation make this visually appealing nature documentary worth buzzing about.
David Rooney-Hollywood Reporter

This hard-working film may not be a balm, but it can help.
Joe Neumaier-New York Daily News

'Queen of the Sun" is a beautiful nature film, with gorgeous, multicolored shots of bees and flowers. It also is a well-made documentary about the troubles of the honeybee.
V.A. Musetto-New York Post

What it is doing, and beautifully, is making a sunny and optimistic case for why the world is worth saving, via gorgeous imagery and poetic appreciations of the bees themselves.
Ian Buckwalter-NPR

See it, and you'll never look at those little creatures buzzing about in quite the same way.
Brent Simon-Shockya.com

Alarming and insightful, offering a rare glimpse into insects in crisis.
Susan Granger-SSG Syndicate

Instead of going all Al Gore and casting stones from his soap box, Siegel takes an evenhanded approach in getting both sides of the story...
Michael C. Walsh-Boston Phoenix

Informative documentary contains an alarming message.
Eric Monder-Film Journal International

A both alarming and inspiring tale of the humble creature that has been around for 150 million years and is essential to our existence. A marvelous documentary incorporating investigative reporting and an artist's vision of nature.
Louis Proyect-rec.arts.movies.reviews

There's half of two good films in Queen Of The Sun, but they're not quite the same film.
Sam Adams-AV Club

What Queen of the Sun lacks in narrative, Siegel mostly makes up for with his camera
Christopher Null-Filmcritic.com

It delivers a message of urgency: Make speed to heed the bees.
Jennifer Merin-About.com

One of the most beautifully filmed documentaries that I've ever seen.
Ross Anthony-Hollywood Report Card

an education on bees and their relation with humans, shown with beautiful photographic color as well as creative animation

Movie Title : Neil Young Trunk Show
Release Date : Mar 19, 2010 Limited
Genre Movie :Documentary,Musical & Performing Arts,Special Interest
Mpaa Rating : Unrated

Actors :Neil Young

Jonathan Demme gives us some Neil Young musical and spiritual soul. Young on a stage full of personal icons: alone in the center of a circle of his beloved acoustic guitars; in the midst of stellar musicians Ben Keith, Ralph Molina, Rick Rosas, Pegi Young and Anthony "Sweet Pea" Crawford, plus an onstage painter portrayed by Eric Johnson. There are delicately offered acoustic numbers like "Sad Movies" and "Mexico"; mesmerizing electric travelogues into the artist's psyche ("No Hidden Path"); searing, chaotic anthems including "Like a Hurricane" and "Cinnamon Girl"; and rarely performed pieces like "Kansas" and "Ambulance Blues" that provide glimpses of Young's less public persona. In addition to his distinctively blistering and plaintive guitar, Neil draws deep melancholy from an old piano and pats it on the side after like a beloved old dog. He sings his heart out again and again. It is a collection for the ages.

New Review For Movie Neil Young Trunk Show

Demme beautifully captures the show's casual intimacy.
Elizabeth Weitzman-New York Daily News

For better or worse, this is a straightforward performance film. I feel it's for the worse.
Joe Williams-St. Louis Post-Dispatch

Like all true filmmakers, Demme also has an eye for telling details.
Stephen Cole-Globe and Mail

The mix of grainy film and pixel-sharp tape, plus some innovative editing that includes multiple split screens, adds brilliant textures to the piece.
Peter Howell-Toronto Star

A legendary musician keeps on rocking in this enjoyable slice of live performance.
Justin Lowe-Hollywood Reporter

Looks and sounds like several million bucks.
Mike Hale-New York Times

You forget you're watching a movie and instead feel like you've got the best seat in the house.
Tricia Olszewski-Washington City Paper

The nitpicky reservations I have of Jonathan Demme's unadorned (some would call it lazy) concert film, Neil Young Trunk Show, do not offset my full-out recommendation that Young fans run right out and see it.
Jim Slotek-Jam! Movies

Do we really need two Neil Young concert films? By the same director, no less? In three short years? The answer given by Neil Young Trunk Show is emphatically yes.
Annlee Ellingson-Moving Pictures Magazine

Neil Young Trunk Show is 82 minutes long, 81 of which are guitar solos.
Chris Hewitt (St. Paul)-St. Paul Pioneer Press

Apparently it's the second film of a trilogy Demme intends on Young -- and the middles are always the hardest parts to get right, yeah?
Shawn Levy-Oregonian

A marvelous document of a still vital musician whose unbending indifference to pop fashion has proven him more creatively durable than any other figure from the golden '60s moment that gave birth to his career.
Ray Greene-Boxoffice Magazine

Young plays a loose, enthusiastic set that is exuberant for its range and energy. Reeks with the authenticity of a hard-working, grown-up music star who does it his way.
Nora Lee Mandel-Film-Forward.com

Sensationally entertaining...Demme captures [Neil] Young's pure, unadulterated passion and love for music in a way that no words can truly [describe].

15 years after his death, Bill Hicks is now more popular than ever, and is widely seen as one of the best comedian of the modern era. However, in America, where he challenged institutions and accepted ways of thinking, he suffered censorship and was never truly recognized by a wide audience. In the country which enshrines freedom of speech in its constitution his story is truly about what it means to be an American. -- (c) Variance PG-13

New Review For Movie American: The Bill Hicks Story

Directors Matt Harlock and Paul Thomas work wonders with the old photos, animating and enhancing them to simulate Hicks' excellent adventure.
Joe Williams-St. Louis Post-Dispatch

Ultimately, the doc comes off as yet another reminder that, in showbiz and elsewhere, one of the greatest tragedies in life is unfulfilled promise.
Joe Leydon-Variety

A portrait of the short-lived artist that will move fans while letting the uninitiated witness enough onstage highlights to leave them wanting more.
John DeFore-Hollywood Reporter

In the stand-up world, to be a cerebral comic in America is to invite anonymity. In his short life, Bill Hicks extended that invitation and, more or less, it was accepted.
Rick Groen-Globe and Mail

Posthumous albums and now this film are securing his legacy and enduring influence.
Kevin Thomas-Los Angeles Times

The movie's appeal extends to the manner of its construction; it's an almost hypnotic kind of hybrid animation in which hundreds of photographs of Hicks in various poses and at various stages in his life are grafted onto two-dimensional backgrounds.
Greg Quill-Toronto Star

American plays less like a primer than a devotional, a dangerous thing for a satirist committed to "evolving ideas."
Corey Hall-Metro Times (Detroit, MI)

It's greatness as a documentary is debatable, but as a eulogy, it's damn near unparalleled.
Rob Humanick-Slant Magazine

If you have any sort of interest in stand-up comedy, this is as fine a documentary as you will see on the subject.
Mike McGranaghan-Aisle Seat

Hicks deserves a truly great documentary, but for now this one will do.
Jeffrey M. Anderson-Combustible Celluloid

Doesn't impart much in the way of hard facts about Hicks, preferring an affectionate route of celebration, blindly fawning over this mystery man in a way that would likely make Hicks himself retch.
Brian Orndorf-BrianOrndorf.com

Rather than simply panning around within still photos, [the filmmakers] have taken images apart by computer and composited them, even moving bits around. ... It's a weird way to recreate missing events, but it's not as dishonest as it sounds.
Andy Klein-Brand X

Documentary American is stylishly told, but engaging chiefly because comedic wunderkind Bill Hicks is a bundle of contradictions.
Brent Simon-Shockya.com

Gracefully walking the line between fan-friendly greatest hits package and newcomer-friendly biopic...
Rob Humanick-Projection Booth

One of the marvels of this documentary, and Bill's life, really, is that it packs so much in such a small window of life.
Mark Bell-Film Threat

They bring Hicks back to life, his rants still sounding fresh and brilliant. Scorched ears never felt so good.
Robert Faires-Austin Chronicle

A very entertaining examination of Hicks' life and legacy.
Chris Bumbray-JoBlo's Movie Emporium

American: The Bill Hicks Story is not the last word on this enduring figure in comedy, but it's certainly the most personal.
Jim Slotek-Jam! Movies

Hicks had a great voice -- lucid, perceptive and outraged -- and it's great to hear it again.
Norman Wilner-NOW Toronto

"American" is a solid introduction to a man who mastered the art of telling painful truths with a twinkle in the eye. It'll make you laugh, mourn and, above all, think.

A ghostwriter stumbles onto a secret that places his life in danger as he takes down the life story of a former U.K. prime minister in this Roman Polanski-helmed adaptation of the Robert Harris novel. Convinced by his agent that he's been granted a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, talented British screenwriter "The Ghost" (Ewan McGregor) agrees to aid British prime minister Adam Lang (Pierce Brosnan) in completing his memoirs after the leader's former aide dies under mysterious circumstances. Almost immediately after The Ghost arrives at a remote mansion in the U.S. to begin working with the prime minister, Lang is accused of committing a war crime by a former British cabinet minister. Amidst a deluge of protestors and reporters, The Ghost delves into the unfinished manuscript and comes to the terrifying conclusion that his predecessor died because he discovered a link between Prime Minister Lang and the CIA. The more information The Ghost uncovers, the more convinced he becomes that his life could be in danger as well. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

New Review For Movie The Ghost Writer

Polanski's 'The Ghost Writer': Cosmpolitan Composition
Joe Baltake-Passionate Moviegoer

The thread of black humour that runs throughout the film compensates for its occasional moments of madness. It's a film just silly enough to be taken deadly seriously.
Dave Calhoun-Time Out

The result is a political thriller refreshingly long on grown-up dialogue yet lamentably shy on, well, thrills. This chatty thing does go on.
Rick Groen-Globe and Mail

The swirl of visual poetry, political intrigue and personal zeal that Polanski creates gets under your skin and brings an icy hand up your back. This is moviemaking.
Tom Long-Detroit News

Polanski is in total command of his medium, something that hasn't been a sure thing since the 1970s, The Pianist notwithstanding.
Peter Howell-Toronto Star

So elegant, so deliciously scary, so masterfully controlled that you feel tingles of bliss even as your skin crawls.
Colin Covert-Minneapolis Star Tribune

In the total context of Polanski's hard life and grim ordeals ... The Ghost Writer constitutes a miracle of artistic and psychological resilience.
Andrew Sarris-Film Comment Magazine

It's a slow build that hints at something big from the beginning but unravels nicely throughout.
Kevin Carr-7M Pictures

The Ghost Writer is tense, unsettling and deeply thrilling because of the way a master filmmaker looks at the world.
Richard T. Jameson-Parallax View

Polanski's a master of carefully drawing you in that cold gray place where everything is wrong, no one sleeps well and secrets are hidden from the hapless main character until it's too late for anyone to make it out with their lives or souls intact.
Dave White-Movies.com

For all of it's mirroring of real life circumstances, The Ghost Writer's shrouded revelations are ever transitory.
Mark Pfeiffer-Reel Times: Reflections on Cinema

The great thing about Brosnan's performance is that his character's shadow looms over the entire film, yet Brosnan never resorts to chewing the scenery or becoming a Blair charicature.
Matt Neal-The Standard

Polanski's skills are obvious in his compositions and patience, and a nervous energy hovers over much of the picture...yet I consistently felt disengaged, like the pacing was mismanaged.
Gabe Leibowitz-Film and Felt

I would not put the narrative conceit The Ghost Writer perpetrates in its final moments past a doped up high school sophomore in a screenwriting elective.
Jordan Hiller-Bangitout.com

An often-tense affair that comes with just the right amount of cynicism, a great cast, and one that treats the audience with a modicum of intelligence.
Steve Newall-Flicks.co.nz

Polanski at near the top of his form
Brandon Judell-CultureCatch

Polanski does an excellent job evoking an increasing sense of paranoia and danger.
Thomas Caldwell-Cinema Autopsy

The Greyscale Adventures Of Tony Blair: SuperSpy (as I call it) is a deliberately directed, well acted and classy treatment of a plot that is so balls-out ridiculous I firmly believe the writer wears a tin-foil hat.
Marc Fennell-Channel 10 Australia

Polanski grinds the gears to entertaining effect, never losing pace from beginning to end, while not necessarily offering anything new.
Jeffrey Chen-Window to the Movies

We're all entitled to our own opinions regarding his past but Polanski deserves credit as a filmmaker. The Ghost Writer proves that he's as good as ever at the age of 77.
Matthew Toomey-ABC Radio Brisbane

Polanski's master touch, his attention to framing, lighting, to every detail, and his wicked visual witticisms make it a joy for any film lover. Welcome back, Roman.
Julie Rigg-MovieTime, ABC Radio National

This effort joins the director's Frantic in the "jet-lag" category where mind and body can never quite catch up with a new, deeply problematic -- and probably dangerous -- environment.
Lisa Nesselson-sbs.com.au

[E]legant, gripping... gorgeously simple to look at yet deeply involving in its story...
MaryAnn Johanson-Flick Filosopher

In every respect, this is an exemplar of the art of the thriller. Directors like Polanski are a dying breed. We need more of them.
Nick Dent-Sunday Mail (Australia)

Stylish and gripping, The Ghost Writer features a master filmmaker at his very best and a story writhing in personal vendetta.
Matthew Pejkovic-Matt's Movie Reviews

Though Polanski might be a shadow of the filmmaker he once was, he still knows how to push, prod and deceive an audience every which way.
Leigh Paatsch-Courier Mail (Australia)

New Review For Movie Mesrine: Public Enemy #1 (L'ennemi public n1)

Yes, he was a bad guy; but what a great story.
Tom Long-Detroit News

His violent, pathetic end makes you sad not for the man but for a world in which such a creature could exist -- and thrive.
Rene Rodriguez-Miami Herald

You needn't have seen the first chapter to be swept up in this swirl of bloodletting and braggadocio.
Colin Covert-Minneapolis Star Tribune

Director Jean-Francois Richet and screenwriter Abdel Raouf Dafri's movie generates much heat, but little light.
Michael O'Sullivan-Washington Post

Jacques Mesrine's end may be inevitable, but he certainly doesn't bore us along the way.
Kenneth Turan-Los Angeles Times

[It] doesn't dig deeply into why Mesrine was the way he was. It's propelled by such a forceful performance from Cassel that, in the end, it hardly matters.
Cary Darling-Dallas Morning News

Part 1 remains marginally compelling, if for no other reason than that it sets the table for the vastly superior Part 2.
Al Alexander-The Patriot Ledger

The only recent gangster film this one falls short of is "Killer Instinct," the first half of the epic.
Roger Moore-McClatchy-Tribune News Service

Cassel tackles his role like it's the ultimate one-man show, filling his mustachioed character with a feral swagger that conveys tightly coiled threat and sexual charisma. It's not a particularly insightful performance, but it certainly feels authentic...
Jeff Meyers-Metro Times (Detroit, MI)

...both movies would have been better served had they been edited down into one consistently engrossing thriller.
